As you prepare to file your 2012 federal tax return, we
wanted to share with you some information that has been collected over the last
several years regarding the tax deductibility of MBA tuition expenses. We
encourage you to carefully review this PowerPoint presentation before you file your return.
International students have ISSO resources at their
disposal. They have dedicated part of their website to tax
information: http://www.columbia.edu/cu/isso/tax/.
The ISSO also plans to have tax workshops this spring, which we recommend you
attend. Ellen Cohen from their office will send out details on these
workshops via ISSOnews, which goes out to the international student population.
For all students, you will likely need access to your 1098T
to file your return and it can be found online at: http://www.1098t.com/. If you have any
questions or issues with your 1098T, please contact Alex Monroe in Student
Financial Services at am48@columbia.edu
or 212-854-1529.
Since the University cannot officially give tax advice, we
encourage you to contact your accountant or CPA for specific questions you may
have but hope this information is a step in the right direction. Professor Willens has kindly provided his research as a resource.
