Getting Started with Case Teaching
On November 11, Robert Bruner, distinguished professor of business administration at Darden Graduate School of Business, University of Virginia and well-known case writer in corporate finance, led an interactive seminar for 14 faculty member mentors and protégés.
The seminar, called Getting Started with Case Teaching, considered practical and effective solutions to the challenges of getting started in the classroom. Bruner opened the discussion by asking faculty members, “What issues can we address for you?”
He used a short case to explore particular problems and a rich discussion ensued, covering challenges such as new material, student norms, taking command, handling student interactions, youthfulness and reputation. Bruner advised professors to try to think like the learner.
