Angel to Canvas

Canvas LMS: http://canvas.gsb.columbia.edu

In May 2009 Blackboard announced its acquisition of Angel Learning, which provides the current learning management system (LMS) used by Columbia Business School. This created the opportunity for the Business School to examine its options with respect to a learning management system: either to transition to Blackboard or to go to another product.

A committee of faculty, students and administrators (see below) was formed to investigate the transition to Blackboard or another possible replacement for Angel. After extensive research including product comparisons and validation from faculty members, students, and administrators, the Instructure product Canvas was selected. It comes closest to satisfying the functionality that the Business School constituencies requested in the Angel replacement.

The rollout plan for Canvas began this spring with detailed planning, training, and integration with Business School systems. This summer gradual transition of courses begins with the MBA flex core. All courses will be on Canvas by the summer of 2013. As each milestone in the rollout is reached, those affected will be notified by email.

Thank you to the numerous members of the community - students, faculty, and staff - who contributed to the selection process.

Details of the selection process and the rollout of Canvas can be found on the web site https://columbiabusiness.instructure.com/courses/361092.
