School Policies

The School's policies and guidelines help you plan your 2008-09 recruiting efforts at Columbia Business School.

Class attendance and academic commitments must take precedence over all other interests competing for students' time. It is therefore essential that recruiters show flexibility in scheduling recruiting events and interviews around students' academic obligations. Recruiting events include any informational or social event held on or off campus-for example, breakfasts, lunches, dinners, cocktail receptions, informational interviews and corporate presentations-whether open to the general student body or by invitation.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) applies to any school that receives federal funding, including Columbia. The Student Directory, is for the use of students, faculty, and staff of the University only; it is illegal for recruiters to have access to this information. Students in the resume book have consented to have their resumes made available to recruiters. This book is intended for the use of recruiters only; it is not available to every requestor outside the School.

Compliance

Failure to comply with Columbia Business School recruiting policies may have a negative impact on an organization's recruiting efforts at the School. Applicants are sensitive to issues of discrimination in the hiring process, and failure to adhere to acceptable interview practices can seriously damage a company's reputation among students, alumni, faculty and administration.

Organizations found to be in violation of School policies may no longer be permitted to recruit on campus. Please visit the compliance page for full details. Likewise, students are expected to adhere to a given set of policies. We endeavor to work with all parties to ensure a constructive recruiting process.

Please make sure that all interviewers who will be meeting with our candidates are made aware of these acceptable interview practices.

As a liaison between students and employers, the Career Mangement Center handles all issues involving behavior regarded as unprofessional. We expect both students and companies to adhere to the highest possible ethical standards. Should any problem arise, please direct your concerns to Bruce Lloyd, Director of Employer Relations, at (212) 854-5471.
