Noam’s Media Ownership and Concentration in America Wins Award
Eli Noam, a professor in the Finance and Economics Division and director of the Columbia Institute for Tele-Information, is the recipient of the 2010 Robert Picard Award for Books and Monographs for his recent book, Media Ownership and Concentration in America (Oxford University Press, 2009).
Sponsored by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), the award honors a book or a monograph published during the last year that makes a significant contribution to the field of media management and economics.
Noam’s book—called “the best and most comprehensive volume on the state of media concentration as of 2005” by the International Journal of Communication—analyzes the dynamics of 100 mass media, telecommunications, IT, and Internet industries over a period of 25 years. It also examines local media power, vertical concentration, and the changing nature of media ownership through financial institutions and private equity.
The author of 27 books and more than 400 articles covering telecom, film, TV, e-finance, e-commerce, and IT, Noam is currently leading a follow-up project on global media concentration with teams in 30 countries contributing work under a common methodology.
AEJMC’s Media Management and Economics Division promotes teaching, research, and public service activities in mass media management and economics. The award is named in honor of scholar Robert Picard of the Jönköping International Business School.
