This December, Columbia Business School Executive Education is launching a brand new program, Carbon Finance Strategies.
A collaboration with Point Carbon, a world-leading provider of independent news, analysis and consulting services for global power, gas and carbon markets, the program takes place December 1–3, 2009, on the Columbia University campus.

The program's faculty director is Geoffrey Heal, Paul Garrett Professor of Public Policy and Business Responsibility and Bernstein Faculty Leader, Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Center for Leadership and Ethics, who explained why this program is important right now.
"Regulation of carbon emissions has been approved by the House of Representatives, and recently Senators John Kerry and Barbara Boxer introduced a bill into the Senate to regulate carbon emissions," said Professor Heal. "In addition, the Environmental Protection Agency announced that it is going to start regulating carbon emissions. This regulation is going to happen shortly, and most firms in the U.S. do not know what it will mean for them."
Carbon Finance Strategies is tailored for senior and C-level executives who want to understand the cap-and-trade system and the legislative proposals. But the program's goal is even more focused, explained Professor Heal.
"The Carbon Finance Strategies course moves beyond an introduction to carbon finance principles and gives executives the opportunity to create a sustainable and profitable plan for their business operations in a carbon-limited world," he said.
The coursework provides in-depth guidelines for strategic decision-making and includes case studies of corporations within the European Union's trading system. Ultimately, participating executives will understand the full range of implications of the climate change bill and can begin developing the best strategic approach for their business.
Professor Heal said, "We are excited at the opportunity to launch a program that gives businesses the ability to adapt to this changing environment before the legislation is implemented."
