Expert View: Sustainability and Japan

Charles Calomiris, the Henry Kaufman Professor of Financial Institutions and academic director of the Chazen Institute, was among the U.S. educators invited to participate in a week-long session on the sustainability of the Japanese economy. Organized by the Keizai Koho Center, the week of meetings with corporate executives, scholars, government officials and politicians focused on three topics: the competitiveness of Japan’s corporations and changes in its business environment, including corporate strategies, corporate governance issues and developments in the M&A market; financial and fiscal policy reforms; and issues related to the rapidly aging society, such as social security and medical reform, human resources management of corporations and immigration.

Attendees spoke at a symposium on the last day of the program, offering perspectives on the sustainability of the Japanese economy drawn from their area of specialty and the visit.
