The Program on Indian Economic Policies: Free Trade, Democracy and Entrepreneurial Development will promote the creation of knowledge on India’s economy. Under the auspices of the Jerome A. Chazen Institute of International Business, the program will support a robust research program led by scholars from Columbia University, other universities and think tanks in the United States and India. The program is supported by a major grant from the John Templeton Foundation.
A key component of the program is cutting-edge research on policy-relevant topics related to the Indian economy. The program will also establish a data center on India’s economy; disseminate research through conferences, seminars and working papers; and promote economic policy reforms through a variety of vehicles.
Research topics to be addressed by the program include interactions among poverty, inequality, growth and democracy; policies to transform India from a primarily rural, agrarian economy into a modern one; policies to promote better health and education outcomes; and state-level policies to promote growth and poverty alleviation.
