In the late 1990s prolific inventor Dean Kamen embarked on a top secret project to develop a tremendously innovative, low-cost and eco-friendly human self-balancing transporter. In conjunction with his engineering team, he built a prototype of a scooter - the Segway - and attracted well-known venture capitalists to finance the development, manufacturing and marketing of this exciting new technology. The Segway was launched in December 2001 but in 2009 Kamen continued to seek a plan which would enable Segway to attain his original vision of creating a new urban transportation machine that would transform the world.
