Diane is making the transition from a functional manager to a general manager. She approaches this opportunity with some trepidation. She's not only new to the general manager's job; this particular subsidiary involves retail trade which she knows nothing about and is based in a country whose culture, although she's French, had become largely foreign to her. In addition, she quickly learns that the subsidiary has problems of which headquarters executives seemed unaware.
