Case Competition 2009: The Indian Premier League
Columbia Business School is known for its international student body, lending a global lens to most class discussions. Further cultivating the School's worldwide perspective are case studies that spotlight international business initiatives. A notable example of the School’s international case collection is Marketing Professor Rajeev Kohli's Launching the Indian Premier League, which was featured in the 2009 Case Competition. The case, which was analyzed by both Kohli’s students and competition participants, focused on an entrepreneurial endeavor within the well established Indian cricket scene.
Launching the Indian Premier League offered Columbia CaseWorks an exciting opportunity to partner with a prominent team of professionals and celebrities out of India and Great Britain, including Lalit Modi, the founder and CEO of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Indian TV anchorwoman Sonali Chander, and London-based international sports marketing consultants Peter Griffiths and Andrew Wildblood. In recalling the many months of carefully coordinated conferences and interviews, Columbia CaseWorks editor Ronnie Sacco credits her international colleagues with their utmost dedication to the project - despite national media commitments within India and demanding schedules on all sides. "I was impressed by how readily such high-profile business people and celebrities in India and Great Britain were willing to work with Columbia Business School faculty and students, and how generous they were with their time," she commented.
The many months of effort paid off: The first annual Case Competition was a tremendous success. Cluster C team winners set the mark high in the Spring term; and Cluster Y winners took the top prize in the second round this past summer. The event also garnered national coverage on Indian television.
